On April 27, the Netherlands will turn orange to celebrate the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. This year is an extra special King’s Day; the 10-year anniversary of kingship will be celebrated in 010. Have you already thought about how you will celebrate King’s Day this year? 1. Wave to the king
The royal family will start their journey across Rotterdam at 11:00 AM from the Afrikaanderplein. They will walk through the Pretorialaan to the corner of the Maashaven where they board the water taxi. From here they sail along the SS Rotterdam and under the Erasmus Bridge to dock at Plein 1940. They will walk through the Markthal to the Binnenrotte. At the Binnenrotte it’s a party all day long. At 1:00 PM you can wave to the king and his family!
2. Visit a flea market
During King’s Day you can sell your own stuff almost anywhere in the Netherlands with a stall or on a rug. Flea markets are also organized in various places in Rotterdam. Visit Schouwburgplein, Eendrachtsplein, Mauritsweg or Westersingel in the city centre. Do you live outside the city center? Great chance that there is also a flea market near you! Clean up your shed and sell your own stuff or stroll along the different rugs and score nice items.
3. Go to an event
During King’s Day, various events and festivals are organized throughout the Netherlands. Go out with your friends and enjoy music from the best Dutch artists. In Rotterdam, several free festivals are organized on King’s Day. For example, visit Containerbar Noord on the Noordplein, go to Royal Republic at the Hofbogen or take a look at the Baroeg pop stage.
