What is NEN 4400-1, anyway?

The NEN 4400-1 standard outlines a set of strict requirements that Dutch staffing agencies must comply with. These include rules on VAT, payroll taxes, employee records, and collective labour agreements. The bar is high—and rightly so. Everything needs to run smoothly for both employees and clients, with no room for issues or fraud.

Why is NEN 4400-1 certification so important?

Let’s face it: there are quite a few stereotypes and misconceptions about staffing agencies and temporary work. (We even wrote an article about it ourselves.) These prejudices can lead to negative views—not just of staffing agencies and their temps, but sometimes even of the companies that hire them.

The NEN 4400-1 certification shows that everything is fully transparent and above board. It ensures that temporary workers receive fair pay, just like any other employee. It also guarantees that they’re offered proper housing if needed. Simply put: it confirms that things are done the right way.
