On May 1st, it's Labour Day. In many countries, that means a day off, parades, and unions standing up for workers' rights. But in the Netherlands? Most of us just keep working. After all, we're not afraid to roll up our sleeves. But the work we do should make sense – it should be right. That’s why it’s good to think about where this day comes from, and why working is more than just “doing your job.”
The beginning: the fight for a fair workday
International Workers' Day originated in the 19th century, when workers in America fought for an eight-hour workday. No more twelve-hour shifts slaving away for just a few pennies, but fair working hours and better conditions. Thanks to this fight, we now have benefits like minimum wage, scheduled breaks, workplace safety, and vacation days. What now seems obvious had to be fought for, tooth and nail.
In the Netherlands? We just keep working
In countries like Belgium, Germany, and France, people stop and think about work and fairness on May 1st. In the Netherlands, we often keep working. Maybe that fits our way of thinking: less complaining, more doing. But still, there are still many people working hard without everything being properly taken care of. And that's what matters: doing your job is great, but it needs to be fair and properly organized. That's what Concreeto stands for.
Work hard, but under good conditions
At Concreeto, we believe in the strength of work. We work hard ourselves, and we expect the same from others. But that doesn't mean anything is allowed. A safe workplace, clear agreements, timely payments, proper guidance – these aren’t bonuses. They're basic standards. And if something is not right, we say something. Concreeto stands for fair work, clear communication, and a way of working that really helps.
A moment to reflect
Labour Day isn't necessarily a celebration. It’s a moment of awareness. A moment to reflect on what work means, and what you receive in return. We're not afraid of hard work – but it needs to be fair, safe, and well organized. That’s what we care about. Concreeto makes sure your work counts – on May 1st, and every other day of the year.
