3 Tips to Improve Your CV (Without It Taking Hours)

Dreading writing your CV? You’re not alone. Many people don’t know where to start, doubt whether their experience is good enough, or think their CV needs to look highly professional. 1. Put your work experience first

Worried that your qualifications won’t make enough of an impression? Don’t be. They don’t have to. Employers in construction, engineering, logistics and cleaning are mainly interested in what you’ve already done. Your work experience is therefore your strongest asset. Put it at the top of your CV, before your qualifications. That way, a recruiter can immediately see what you can do on the job. Show them the evidence first, then the rest.

2. Improve your CV with specific examples

Do you find it difficult to put your work into words? That’s something almost everyone struggles with. General terms may feel safe, but they don’t actually say much. So, be as specific as possible. Instead of writing “responsible for warehouse operations”, for example, write: “processed and packed 200 orders every day”. Do you work in engineering? Rather than saying “carried out maintenance”, write: “inspected and maintained 15 installations every week”. Numbers and specific tasks immediately show what you’re capable of. A small change in wording can make a big difference to your CV.

3. Keep your CV clear and easy to read

Think that more information is always better? It isn’t. A recruiter spends an average of just 10 seconds looking at a CV before forming a first impression. Make those 10 seconds count. Use clear headings, short sentences and plenty of white space, and keep your CV to a maximum of 1–2 pages. That way, your most important skills and qualities stand out straight away. Clarity will always beat quantity.
