Summer has officially started, and the warm days are on their way. While these days are perfect for enjoying the sun, it’s also important to take good care of yourself during work. Heat can cause issues faster than you think, from fatigue and headaches to dehydration. That’s why we’re sharing a few practical tips to help you stay safe and fit, even when the temperature rises.
1. Stay hydrated
In high temperatures, staying hydrated is key. You lose fluids more quickly through sweating, which can lead to headaches, dizziness, or trouble concentrating. Try to sip small amounts of water throughout the day. Need a reminder? Get a 2 litre bottle with time markers on it. That way, you’ll know exactly if you’re on track with your intake and when it’s empty, you know you’ve done well.
2. Wear breathable clothing
What you wear makes a big difference in how you feel the heat. Choose light, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen that allow your body to release heat. Avoid dark colors, as they hold onto warmth. Wearing light-colored clothing will help your body stay cooler and make working in the sun or heat a lot more comfortable.
3. Take regular breaks in the shade
If you work outside, you’re exposed to direct sunlight and around midday, that sun can be intense. Take short breaks in the shade throughout the day, even if it’s just for five minutes an hour. These short pauses give your body a chance to cool down and help reduce the risk of overheating or heatstroke.
4. Eat regularly
Hot weather can affect your appetite, or make food feel heavy on your stomach. Still, it’s important to keep your energy up. Spread your meals throughout the day instead of eating one large lunch. Choose light, nutritious snacks like fruit, yogurt or nuts. Fruits such as watermelon, apples or oranges also provide extra fluids and natural sugars. Ideal when it’s hot.
5. Schedule heavy tasks early in the day
Heavy work like lifting, moving or physically demanding tasks are best done early in the morning while it’s still cooler. Try to adjust your schedule, if possible, so you can get those jobs out of the way before the hottest part of the day. Later in the day, focus on lighter tasks.
6. Look out for each other
Working safely in the summer is something you do together. Keep an eye on your colleagues. Are they drinking enough, taking breaks, or do they look unwell? Speak up and remind each other to rest in the shade or drink some water. Together, we can make sure everyone stays healthy and safe throughout the day. Even when the heat is intense.

Summer is a great time to be outside and stay active, but it does require a bit of extra care for your health. With these tips, you can keep working safely and responsibly.
