Are you interested in a job in horticulture? Working between the plants, flowers or vegetables. The horticultural sector is an active industry with many different possibilities. In this blog, we tell you everything about the sector itself, the possible jobs and everything else that’s involved!

 

THE HORTICULTURE SECTOR IN A NUTSHELL

The horticultural sector includes all activities related to cultivation, taking care and harvesting plants. These can be, for example, beautiful ornamental plants and flowers such as gerberas or orchids. But also the cultivation of fruit and vegetables such as peppers, strawberries and tomatoes. Horticulture is an important sector for producing food and developing new plants.

HORTICULTURE IN HET WESTLAND

Het Westland is worldwide known for its greenhouses. It is never really dark because in the evening the entire area is illuminated by the orange glow of the greenhouses. Fresh vegetables, flowers and plants have been produced for over more than 100 years. A lot has changed due to smart innovations, sustainable production methods and high-tech inventions. Even though more and more work is done by machines, there is still enough demand for people within the horticultural sector. Therefore there is a good chance that you will be working in this region!

WORKING IN HORTICULTURE

There are many different functions within horticulture. Help to produce healthy vegetables or grow the most beautiful flowers, everything is possible. There is more than enough to discover in the dynamic world of horticulture. The work gives satisfaction because you can directly see the results. You will find your flowers, plants, vegetables or fruit in no time in the shops. In addition, there is often enough room to develop yourself and to learn new things.

FOR WHO IS THIS JOB SUITABLE?

Working in horticulture is not for the faint-hearted. You will have to get up early, dare to roll up your sleeves and be able to withstand the heat. Most of the work takes place in a greenhouse where you are physically active all day. A big advantage, because you don’t have to go to the gym after a day of work!
Various MBO and HBO courses are in line with the horticultural sector, but you can also work without suitable education or experience. You will immediately learn the necessary skills in practice. A job in horticulture is therefore ideal if you are ready for a career switch or if you are looking for a new challenge.
